An opening reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, April 26, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The models in the eye paintings are my wife, friends and former students, many of whom are artists. These are portraits, but the image of the eye is so metaphorically rich that I hope they do more. For me, isolating and slightly enlarging the eye amplifies its eroticism. I think there are also aspects of a ping-pong gaze and an inside-and-outsideness (windows are another of my favorite subjects) in these works. The parking lots are painted from photos taken at night at racetracks and supermarkets, although there’s nothing particularly significant about that; I’ve just always loved painted lines on asphalt. The new element in the sculptures is the inclusion of Noguchi’s Akari lamps. I’d like to note that I intend the use of the readymade as homage, not as critique. In these, and in my more recent sculpture, I’ve been colliding and confusing my painterly and sculptural interests into single pieces. I’m also playing with the design problem of using the packing crate as part of the sculpture. A somewhat unintended benefit of the design solution was the surface of the crates, which allow me to play more literally with painterly abstraction, something that was sublimated in the earlier light and carpet sculpture. Like the eye paintings, I hope the sculptures have something to do with inside-and-outsideness, and something to do with looking and recognizing. Dike Blair, 4/6/08 Dike Blair is a New York based artist who has exhibited both nationally and internationally for 30 years. His work is in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art and the MOCA, LA. He exhibits with Feature Inc. in New York, and this is his second solo exhibition with the Mary Goldman Gallery. His book of collected interviews and essays, Again, was recently published by Whitewalls. Included in the book is an essay on Noguchi’s lamps. An opening reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, March 15 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The Alcubierre Metric is a mathematical term for hypothetical space travel that would be faster than speed of light, a concept popularized as “warp drive” on Star Trek. In his childhood, Pruitt’s interest in science fiction and comic books led him to the frightening conclusion that there were no black people in the future other than the few portrayed as evil or criminal. Over time Pruitt’s frustration intensified as he witnessed the ongoing subversion of images and information pertaining to African American political, social, and cultural resistance. While inequalities and injustices that provoked the civil rights and black liberation movements are still rampant, their contemporary representation is frequently overshadowed by a false sense of inclusion. Pruitt’s hope is to inspire reflection not with cartoon dichotomies nor with anesthetized contemporary visual discourse, but with a reinvigorated imagery that pushes both the past and present forward. By accelerating the dialogue, he seeks to generate alternative responses to a discourse that has deflated. In crafting large-scale portraits and sculptures, Pruitt combines visual styles from recent history and the present, creating bold images that demand the processing of eras. While the artworks are graphically strong and deftly rendered, it is this sensitivity to the folds of history that gives these figures their remarkable authority. Robert Pruitt is a Houston based artist and member of the art and social collective Otabenga Jones & Associates. Exhibitions include the 2006 Whitney Biennial, New York; The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York; The Contemporary Art Museum, Houston; Artpace, San Antonio, and Clementine Gallery, New York. Pruitt is a recent recipient of the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation grant. This is the artist’s first solo show with the gallery. ALEJANDRO DIAZ, AMIR H. FALLAH, ANDREW LEWICKI January 25, 2008 — March 8, 2008 Mary Goldman Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of work by Alejandro Diaz, Amir H. Fallah, and Andrew Lewicki, on view from January 25 through March 8, 2008. An opening reception for the artists will be held the evening of Friday, January 25th. What do you care? asks an open-ended question, eliciting various interpretations from the three artists in the exhibition. For Andrew Lewicki the question points defiantly at the status quo. A recent graduate of Otis College of Art and Design, Lewicki has crafted a skate ramp and rail out of walnut and gold-plated steel. His elegant construction identifies illicit activities like street skating and vandalism, and points out the affinities between fine art and urban subcultures. In recent years, the city of Los Angeles has explored civic "solutions" to such practices by installing legal skate parks and authorized graffiti walls, a tactic Lewicki exposes as both antithetical and irksome to the rebellious spirit inherent in these exploits. Based in New York City, Alejandro Diaz is originally from San Antonio where he developed a pertinent body of work exemplifying the complex and visually rich cultural milieu particular to South Texas and Mexico. Diaz's conceptual and campy signs and sculptures are emblematic of his humor infused politics and his ongoing involvement with art as a form of entertainment, activism, and public intervention. The question of "caring" in this exhibition applies to the viewer's reaction when confronted with issues of ethnic stereotyping. Diaz is a recent recipient of the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation grant and has exhibited with the Public Art Fund, NY and Artpace, San Antonio. Future activities include a group exhibition at The Los Angeles County Museum of Art and a solo project at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, CT. Amir H. Fallah's fort-like terrarium is the result of a continually evolving interactive process. The artist interviews friends about memories of early romantic experiences and invites them to participate by drawing self-portraits as cacti. By invoking the failures, triumphs, and discomfort of the teenage love affair, Fallah exploits his anthropomorphic analogies to come to terms with the past. The enclosed landscape of potted succulents serves as a voyeuristic portrait gallery that protects the vulnerability of his subjects, despite their being exposed. A graduate of UCLA's MFA program, Fallah is the founder of the independent publication Beautiful/Decay. Selected exhibitions include Nathan Larramendy, Ojai, The Third Line, Dubai, and Rhys Gallery, Boston. He is currently exhibiting at Lokaal 01 in the Netherlands and the third L.A. The enlivened colors and recognizable shapes combine to reveal ornate abstractions where the unfolding reality is tenuous. 							SANFORD BIGGERS'S *THE SOMETHIN' SUITE* PREMIERING DURING PERFORMA 07 THE SECOND EDITION OF THE BIENNIAL OF NEW VISUAL ART PERFORMANCE TO BE HELD IN NEW YORK CITY OCTOBER 27 - NOVEMBER 20, 2007 New York, September 19, 2007 - PERFORMA 07, the second biennial of new visual art performance, will be held in New York City from October 27 - November 20, 2007. Featuring over eighty artists presented in collaboration with a consortium of thirty key cultural organizations throughout the city, including the Guggenheim Museum, the Kitchen, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, China Institute, and the Studio Museum in Harlem, PERFORMA 07 promises an exciting three weeks of innovative cultural programming for New York City and the international world of contemporary art and visual art performance. Sanford Biggers is one of ten featured artists commissioned to create a new work for PERFORMA 07. Biggers will present The Somethin' Suite, a conceptual, multimedia exploration of the "Negro variety show" popular at the turn of the 20th century. Presented in speakeasies and small variety theaters across the country, with performers (both black and white) typically appearing in blackface for white audiences, these shows reinforced negative racial stereotypes of the day. They simultaneously catapulted some of America's most inventive musicians, including Ma Rainey, Scott Joplin, and Al Jolson, to stardom. Arguably the first distinctively American theatrical form, the oppressive system behind blackface entertainment has, according to Biggers, evolved into today's popular music industry: "Both systems have ironically gener ated some of the most notorious images of black Americans, while simultaneously acting as a lens into aspects of black vernacular culture." Following the traditional structure of the minstrel show, with its series of acts led by an M.C., The Somethin' Suite opens with M.C. Freedome Bailey, who is then followed by performances by some of today's most exciting young visual and musical artists. Act 1: Swing Low presents two well-known singers, Esthero and Shae Fiol, performing a duet while perched on a giant swing; On Da Block: The Birth of Niggy Tardust features award winning spoken-word performer Saul Williams; Blackening Up presents DJ Jahi Sundance (producer, D.J., and turntable instrumentalist) mixing a sonic history of American popular music, and the final act, C'est Mon BlaBla, features Biggers himself reading from Yukio Mishima's Confessions of a Mask. Additional performers include Martin Luther (singer/songwriter, performer), CX Kidtronik (D.J., performer), Imani Uzuri (singer), and other special guests. The Somethin' Suite will premiere at The Box on November 12, 2007. PERFORMA is a non-profit multidisciplinary arts organization dedicated to exploring the critical role of live performance in the history of twentieth century art and to encouraging new directions in performance for the twenty-first century. An opening reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, October 20 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. In her first solo exhibition with the gallery, Aida Klein presents a series of watercolors featuring "snow angels", the activity of laying in the snow to create a winged body impression. Her inspiration came from the idea that one can feel a strong connection to experiences they themselves never had. The emotion of nostalgia for something that is part of a larger collective memory is at the heart of Klein's practice. By evoking the sensation of familiarity in her paintings, she questions the evolution of self-identity, and its dependence on environmental versus experiential forces. Whether depicting an audacious woman tackling the cold in a floral bikini, or a child in full snowsuit napping in a frosty blanket of white, Klein captures a static moment of both intimate and iconographic allusion. The similarity of poses in the individual works creates a sense of cinematic repetition. The experience is much like watching someone else's home movie, while at the same time imagining one's own. Aida Klein is a Los Angeles based artist and recent graduate of Otis College of Art and Design. Exhibitions include Hunsaker/Schlesinger Gallery, Santa Monica and M + B Fine Art, Hollywood. She was recently selected for inclusion in the upcoming Pacific Coast edition of the New American Paintings publication, curated by Alma Ruiz, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. An opening reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, September 8 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. In a departure from his recent paintings depicting sports themes, Rathman turns his attention to garage bands and the fantasy of escape they impart on suburban life and adolescence. From mosh pits to abandoned basketball courts and junkyard automobiles, he moves gracefully from the charged adrenaline of a rock fan's stage dive to the eerie solitude of a lone vintage Mustang. The angst and fleeting immortality of teenage years is further reiterated in appropriated text quoting song lyrics. The images, read together, capture the beautiful hazy transcendence of a live show. One senses an isolated excitement of restless youth, when the world seemed claustrophobically small, and the guitar became a vehicle for conquering monotony. Long live rock and roll!
